Tusk is stunned by the AfD's success in Saxony-Anhalt

Warsaw/Prague - Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was stunned by the AfD's success in the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt. “In Poland, only idiots or traitors can enjoy the triumph of the AfD in Germany,” wrote the liberal-conservative politician on the online platform X on election evening. Quite a few of them had gathered in the opposition parties Konfederacja and Law and Justice (PiS).

In the neighboring country of the Czech Republic, Parliament President Tomio Okamura congratulated the AfD on its election success on public television CT. “Above all, I hope that she will be part of the new government coalition in the state of Saxony-Anhalt,” said the founder of the right-wing Freedom and Direct Democracy party (SPD).

A coalition against the AfD would contradict the will of the voters, said the chairman of the House of Representatives, the more important of the two parliamentary chambers. A coalition consisting of the right-wing populist ANO led by billionaire Andrej Babis, Okamura's SPD and the Motorists party has been in power in the Czech Republic since the end of 2025.

The conservative opposition politician and former Interior Minister Vit Rakusan, meanwhile, called for lessons to be learned from the outcome of the state elections: "The AfD's victory in Saxony-Anhalt shows how dangerous it is when Democrats leave such important issues as migration and other burning social issues to the populists," said the chairman of the STAN party. Instead of just being outraged about the success of “openly pro-Russian extremists in Germany”, we must counteract our own realistic and sustainable solutions.
