It was an energetic and playful president who spoke for an hour and a quarter.
In the arena in Dallas where the Republican mid-year convention took place, most of the seats on the top floor were empty, while the rest of the stands were more well filled.
It was something the president either didn't see, or chose to ignore.
- The fake news said it wouldn't be full, but it is completely packed. And outside there are just as many who want to come in, said Donald Trump.
The president continued to repeat inaccuracies during his speech, such as that he won three presidential elections and that food prices are falling.
Donald Trump is struggling with declining trust numbers - only 33 percent of Americans think he is doing an acceptable job, according to Reuters/Ipsos.
Even so, the president appealed to voters to consider the midterm election a personal election.
- When I'm on the ballot, the Republicans do well. So I'm asking you to pretend you're voting for me.
The president also promised to travel to the 35 states where Republicans are at risk of losing seats in the fall elections, to get more conservative voters to the polls.
Trump presented the most startling campaign promise part way into his speech, when he offered money to all citizens – provided the right party wins.
- I promise: if the Republicans keep both chambers, thanks to our country's enormous economic success, I will give $5,000 to every adult citizen of the United States, the president said, calling the initiative the Trump handout.
During the speech, the topics alternated between high and low. The president mixed inaccuracies with real successes, such as the stock markets breaking records and the murder rate being the lowest it has been in a hundred years.
Some of the talking points included the Mavericks' weak transfer window and Intel's early 2000s failures.
The president also warned of the threat from communism – which is what the Trump administration calls the democratic socialists, who have seen success in several of this year's primaries.
- There is a sick little cloud above our country. I don't think it's going to grow, but we have to make sure it doesn't, because it's about communism," Trump said.
At some points, the crowd chanted "2028", a call for the president to run in the next presidential election - something he is not allowed to do under the constitution.
But this time, Trump didn't flirt with the idea. On the contrary, he mentioned several times that his time will one day be over.
- I want you to remember in five, six years - when this country rocks - that I was the one who started it, he said.
On another occasion, he mentioned that he is selfless, because he is building a huge ballroom that he will hardly have time to use.
- People forget that I will only be able to use it for a few months. It is for all future presidents, hopefully many Republicans but also Democrats.
The Republicans have never before held a mid-year convention. The idea came from the president himself to give the party an energy boost before the mid-term elections.
One may be needed, as polls show more Democrats than Republicans plan to vote.
That many seats in the arena were empty was expected, as several Republican congressmen announced that they would not attend the convention.
At the beginning of the week, the party also sent out free tickets to contributors via SMS, indicating that ticket sales were not going as they had hoped.
Nevertheless, the president was alert and in good spirits. He joked with his fellow party members, criticized Senate candidate Ken Paxton's clothing choices and explained why he calls his opponents "dumocrats."
Towards the end of the speech, he looked out over the arena and smiled.
- This arena is packed all the way up. And even though I talked for an hour and twenty minutes, no one left. None, he said.
At the same time, camera images showed how the empty chairs had become more numerous.
