3 Young People Searching for Treasure in Tunisia Found Lifeless

The dead bodies of three people who went underground to search for treasure were found in the Sherarda region of Kairouan province of Tunisia. According to local media reported by Al Arabiya, a search and rescue operation was launched on Monday evening upon the notice of families who had not heard from the young people since Sunday night. During the work, a motorcycle belonging to one of the missing young people was found. The teams examined the area where the motorcycle was found and found a pit that was approximately 8 meters deep and opened into narrow underground tunnels. As a result of the work of civil defense teams that lasted until the morning hours, the dead bodies of three young people were removed from the tunnels.

CAUSES OF DEATH ARE BEING INVESTIGATED

It has not yet been determined whether the deaths of the three people were caused by soil collapse or suffocation caused by gases leaking from the devices used during the excavation. In the images shared from the scene, it was seen that many local residents gathered around the pit, and the rescue and burial efforts continued until the morning hours. Although it is prohibited by law in Tunisia, it is stated that illegal excavations are common, especially in order to find treasures allegedly buried in archaeological sites. In addition to Kairouan, similar treasure hunting activities are also observed in various rural regions of the country.
