你拍到的海龜,可能不是第一次來!海洋委員會海洋保育署與「海龜點點名」協會攜手科技業打造「TURTLE-FINDER海龜辨識平台」今天正式啟用,透過AI辨識海龜臉部特徵,讓民眾只要拍下海龜清楚的臉部照片並上傳,就有機會知道「牠是誰」,也能協助研究人員持續記錄海龜去了哪裡、在哪裡出現,甚至了解野放後是否再次被看見,有助於海龜「戶口普查」,為台灣海域的嬌客建立新的資料庫。

海保署結合公民科學家多年的資料,與宏碁基金會(Acer)使用AI技術,讓原本散落的海龜紀錄逐步整合成一套完整的「海龜身分資料庫」,進一步運用392隻海龜及逾1.1萬張影像的訓練AI模型,經過1年多的不斷調整、磨合,現在對海龜個體的辨識率可高達90%。

海保署長陸曉筠表示,海龜擁有自己的「臉部紋路」,從海龜眼睛周圍及臉部兩側的鱗片形狀、大小與排列,每一隻都不完全相同,就像人類的指紋一樣,因此可以利用照片進行個體辨識(Photo-ID),各國都已開發相關的軟體,在AI時代使用AI更能節省大量時間。

TURTLE-FINDER的發想,來自民間推動多年的「海龜點點名」公民科學家計畫,海龜點點名協會理事長馮加伶說,長達7年的資料累積許多,相對的就是人工辨識的時間耗時越來越長,有了AI系統幫忙,熱心公民只要上傳海龜臉部照片再分析鱗片特徵,與資料庫中的既有個體進行比對,大幅縮短人工辨識的時間,感謝海保署及基金會,將AI技術導入海龜保育,讓既有的公民科學資料轉化為實際應用。

海保署強調,TURTLE-FINDER將逐步整合海龜擱淺、救傷、收容、野放及地方政府的相關資料。當同一隻海龜在不同時間、不同地點被再次記錄,就能慢慢拼出牠的活動軌跡,幫助研究人員了解海龜的移動、棲地利用及野放後生活情形,也讓保育政策有更多科學依據。也強調AI不是代替人,而是幫助人更有效率地做海洋保育的大數據分析。
