Indictment against detained comedian Deniz Göktaş: Request for up to 9 years and 8 months in prison

In the indictment prepared against detained comedian Deniz Göktaş, three separate accusations were made due to his words in his show "Dead Sea" published on YouTube.

It was requested that Göktaş be sentenced to imprisonment from 2 years and 2 months to 9 years and 8 months for the crimes of "insulting the President", "inciting the public to hatred and hostility or humiliating" and "praising the crime and the criminal".

The prosecutor's office claimed that Göktaş's "diver", "fasting suicide bomber" and "Quran" jokes were "intended to insult the religion of Islam".

In the indictment, for the words "fasting suicide bomber", it was evaluated that it was said that fasting people are suitable to become suicide bombers and that it is not clear where a suicide bomber will explode if he is fasting.

THAT SHORT FILM WILL BE PRESENTED AS EVIDENCE

In his article in Sözcü, journalist İsmail Saymaz pointed out a short film called 'The First Day of Vacation', which Göktaş shot in 2019 and received 12 thousand TL support from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Saymaz stated that Göktaş's lawyer, Metin Sinan Aslan, will present the film to the court to show that the burkini joke was not intended to insult religion.

Saymaz explained what happened in the movie in question as follows:

"In this film, a man builds a sand sculpture on the beach. A child destroys the sculpture. The man beats the child. The burkini-wearing woman, who is described as a 'sensitive woman' in the script, intervenes. She says, 'Oh, gentlemen, these are children! You have no right to use violence!'. The man turns this objection into a regime crisis. Looking at the woman's clothes, he responds as follows: 'Are you going to teach me what to do where and what? You already know how to kick a ball and destroy things.' The woman reacts by crying. The man reacts by crying. "You have ruined the country, at least leave it alone on holiday!"
