UK newspapers report on prisoner release reforms, royal security polling, AI stock gains, and other national stories

Several of Monday's papers lead with changes to the prisoner early release announced by Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The Times leads on the fact that killers, including two men convicted over the death of PC Andrew Harper, will stay behind bars.

The Daily Telegraph says the changes will "free high-risk criminals". The government will look to release some inmates who were jailed under an old indeterminate sentencing law in order to free up cells. Critics warn that offenders "deemed a danger to society" could be let out, the paper reports.

"Stalkers and abusers on 'indefinite' sentences up for release," is the Daily Mail's take on the reforms. It quotes a Labour minister who accuses the prime minister of not being "focused on risk".

The Guardian quotes a critics from the other side of the debate, who say "the change could undermine progressive prison reform in England and Wales". They say overcrowded prisons are "one major event away from disaster". It also carries a picture taken at the 60th edition of the Notting Hall carnival, which began on Sunday.

The Daily Mirror says the prison release changes will comes as "a relief for victims' families". Burnham has also pledged to "deport foreign criminals to tackle prisons crisis", according to the paper.

"The bravest boys in Britain" is how the Daily Star describes the sons of police constable Matthew Blades, who was killed in the A66 fatal crash. They led out Man Utd, the team their father supported, on Sunday at Old Trafford, where tributes were paid.

Polling commissioned by the i Paper suggests 63% of Britons believe the Duke of Sussex should pay for his security costs in the UK. It says the independent committee which oversees royal security is "understood to be planning a review of their claim for state-funded protection", which the Sussexes have not benefited from when visiting the UK from California in recent years.

Big tech firms "enjoy $160bn (£118bn) paper boost from stakes in AI groups", the Financial Times reports. Companies such as Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia and Microsoft have seen big gains, but there are concerns they "are overstating the strength of the AI boom" and "risk distorting the financial picture at a time when investors are closely scrutinising tech earnings".

The Daily Express says a "childhood sweetheart" of Virginia Giuffre fears Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's staff "won't cooperate" with police investigations. The friend of the late Jeffrey Epstein accuser questions whether royal associates would want to "embarrass" the former prince.
