UN Command finds North Korean mine in South Korea, cites Armistice violation

Mine found south: UN Command investigators found an active North Korean anti-personnel mine on the South Korean side of the Military Demarcation Line and determined that an Armistice Agreement violation had occurred.

Responsibility left open: UNC did not specify which side committed the violation, how the mine breached the agreement or which provisions were violated, saying the finding should be “interpreted as written.”

Blasts injured troops: The finding followed two Sept. 21 explosions inside the DMZ that injured three South Korean military personnel operating south of the MDL.

Seoul points north: South Korea’s military said blast evidence indicated North Korean mines were likely responsible and later found another North Korean mine near the explosion site.

Minister assigns blame: Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul explicitly called the incident a North Korean Armistice violation and said Seoul would pursue corresponding measures with UNC and the international community.

Past cases clearer: Unlike the latest statement, UNC directly blamed North Korea after a 2015 mine incident and cited specific Armistice provisions; it has also previously found violations by both Koreas in cross-border exchanges of fire.
