A magnitude 5 earthquake in Alhendín is felt in Granada and several provinces without leaving any personal injuries

An earthquake of magnitude 5 and with its epicenter in the town of Alhendín has been widely felt among the population during the early hours of this Saturday in the city of Granada and in the metropolitan area. So far, there is no evidence that it has caused any personal injury.

As reported by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) on its website, the earthquake occurred exactly at 01:04 in the morning, with a depth first of two and then ten kilometers and with a latitude of 37.1147 degrees and -3.6618 degrees longitude.

The earthquake has also been especially noticeable in Málaga, Jaén and Córdoba and has also been felt in Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha, the Community of Madrid and Extremadura. Thus, according to IGN, the tremor has been perceived in more than 200 municipalities in five autonomous communities, although with different intensity.

Numerous user videos about the earthquake are circulating on social networks, especially from Granada, in which some debris can be seen in the streets, and comments from other parts of the Andalusian geography from people who have woken up when they felt the earthquake, without any personal injuries being reported.

This earthquake also occurred seven hours after a first earthquake of magnitude 3.7 and intensity IV that had its epicenter in the town of La Zubia.

After the earthquake, the IGN has recorded other aftershocks of different intensity concentrated in the metropolitan area of Granada. These tremors have had their epicenter in Ogíjares, La Zubia, Otura, Gójar, Churriana de la Vega, Armilla and Alhendín and the intensity has varied between 1.6 and 2.6 magnitude.

The events have caused more than 200 emergency calls and material damage, but no injuries and no casualties. Some of the citizens who have called 112 have indicated that cracks have occurred, elements such as cornices, rubble, walls have fallen and damage has been recorded in some buildings.

The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has referred to the "night of shock and concern in Granada" due to this earthquake, which "has caused some material damage and has been felt in several provinces", and has called for calm, in the face of "any damaged cornice or façade" that may come loose.

The Minister of the Presidency, Health and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, has activated the Emergency Plan for the Seismic Risk of Andalusia, in the emergency phase, operational situation 1, after the earthquake.
