US trade representative calls for Britain's economic departure from the EU

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has called on Great Britain to turn more economically away from the EU. Despite Brexit, Great Britain continues to choose “Brussels over America” when it comes to trade issues, Greer told the Financial Times. "You know that this is a problem for us and that it represents a challenge."

After Brexit, the British government will no longer be bound by EU trade rules. Nevertheless, it continues to orient itself towards them and close its markets to American goods, explained Greer. British tariffs on US goods remain “pretty high.”

Great Britain should buy more US agricultural products

In response to his calls to relax the rules for US imports, the British government often refers him to the necessary agreements with the European Union. This applies, for example, to agricultural products that are manufactured according to American standards. Last year, the British government concluded an agreement with the USA after US President Donald Trump threatened high tariffs. Among other things, Great Britain accepted more imports of US agricultural products at the time.

Greer's comments come at a time when the British government is becoming closer to the EU states. "People are seeing that we need to work more closely together," new Prime Minister Andy Burnham said this week. In a parliamentary speech, he blamed Brexit for the country's weak economic growth.
