Half the time has passed for the UN's environmental goal 30x30 - that's where the world and Sweden stand

Halfway to the UN's 30x30 goals, the goals are not being reached at sea to the same extent as on land. A new report shows that around 20 percent of the land surface and 10 percent of the oceans are protected, while the risk of unreal "paper parks" is highlighted.

Over 1,300 dead and 5,000 missing after glacier collapse in the Himalayas

More than 1,300 people have been confirmed dead and more than 5,000 are missing after a major glacier slide on August 26 near the Nepal-Tibet border. The landslide caused a flood of water, mud and rock to sweep through the valleys. An analysis by World Weather Attribution points to both the 2015 earthquake and climate change as contributing factors, including glacier melting and permafrost thawing. Scientists believe that early signs of instability were already present one to two months before the event, but real-time monitoring of thousands of glaciers is a major challenge. Nepal has requested $20 million in compensation from a UN fund citing climate change as the cause.
