Consumer advice center sues DAZN: price increases in court

The consumer advice center has sued against price increases at the streaming service DAZN. Now the negotiation begins. Those affected can still register in the lawsuit register at short notice.

Berlin. The start of the negotiation of the lawsuit brought by the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv) against the streaming provider DAZN at the Hamm Higher Regional Court (file number: I-12 VKl 1/24): It is about price increases from 2021 and 2022. The consumer advocates consider these to be not permissible.

After the final hearing, consumers have three weeks to file a lawsuit. The consumer advice center is assuming a negotiation day. That would mean: There would still be time until September 25th to join the lawsuit.

What is it about?

The sports streaming provider DAZN has increased its prices several times in current contracts in 2021 and 2022. When the price increased in mid-2022, the provider almost doubled its prices: the monthly subscription suddenly cost 29.99 euros instead of the previous 14.99 euros.

The vzbv is convinced that the contractual clauses underlying the increases have unfairly disadvantaged customers. The class action lawsuit aims to have the price increases declared ineffective - and customers to get their money back.

How do I join the lawsuit?

Anyone affected by the price increases can enter the lawsuit register at the Federal Office of Justice. The consumer advocates explain exactly how this works in the “Klage-Check” on the website www.sammel Klagen.de/verfahren/dazn.

This asks, among other things, how long the contract has existed and whether the price has been increased for an ongoing contract. This is important - because claims from new contracts with the higher price are not covered by this lawsuit.

Why is the class action lawsuit worth it?

Joining the class action lawsuit is free. And: If the lawsuit is successful, the streaming service must automatically compensate plaintiffs - without them having to go to court again. Interest would also be added to the compensation amount.
