Four young people died: Mourning flags ordered after tragic traffic accident

After the traffic accident that killed four people between the ages of 14 and 19, the Barnim district ordered mourning flags to be displayed at its schools and offices. District Administrator Daniel Kurth (SPD) told the dpa news agency. The flags should fly at half-mast until Friday as a sign of public mourning.

Kurth, deeply shocked, spoke of a “terrible misfortune.” The district is offering help to the affected schools, he said. Flowers and candles were laid at the scene of the accident in the morning.

A driver hit three mopeds in oncoming traffic while overtaking on a country road near Biesenthal on Wednesday evening. Three teenagers aged 14, 15 and 16 and a 19-year-old died. The driver of a fourth moped was able to avoid the car and was uninjured. The 61-year-old driver is being investigated for negligent homicide. He was seriously injured and taken to the hospital in a rescue helicopter.
