Wakefield Trinity became only the sixth, and most unlikely, club to win the Super League title after a deserved win over Warrington Wolves.

Only two years after being in the Championship and in their first ever Grand Final, Wakefield took to the Old Trafford stage as if they were to the manor born.

Daryl Powell's side did the bulk of the damage in a devastating first half as they raced into a 19-0 lead on their way to becoming champions of England for the first time since 1968, long before the Super League era.

Trinity carried on from where they had left off in the semi-final against Wigan Warriors with tries from Cameron Scott, Isaiah Vagana and Jazz Tevaga and a drop goal from Jack Sinfield.

Arron Lindop's try gave Warrington brief hope early in the second half, but when Tom Johnstone went over at the other end, the game was up despite Lindop's second try late on.

This is a final few would have predicted seven days ago, let alone at any point throughout the season.

But Warrington snuck past Leeds Rhinos, and Wakefield Trinity then stunned the whole of rugby league as they demolished Wigan on the Warriors' own patch to make it to Old Trafford.

While Warrington have been close in previous years, Wakefield have been spectacular bolters in 2026.

Only two years ago, they were winning the Championship play-off final before their place in Super League was confirmed by the IMG grading system, having been relegated in 2023.

They were sixth last year and went two places better this season before memorable play-off successes over Leigh Leopards and then the Warriors.

In the build-up during the week, Powell had challenged his players to earn legendary status, knowing that was their long-term reward if they could emerge victorious.

After scoring 33 unanswered points in a spell at Wigan, Wakefield simply brought that momentum with them to Old Trafford as they absolutely bossed the first half, stretching that streak to 52 points.

Johnstone had already had one try denied by a TV review before Lachlan Walmsley's brilliant reverse pass sent Scott over to score.

And in a period where everything they did was working, Jake Trueman's high kick on the last tackle was spectacularly caught by Johnstone above opposite wing Albert Hopoate and tapped back for the supporting Vagana to dive over.

They were overpowering their opponents, exemplified by Tevaga being unstoppable from close to the posts for their third try.

And showing the sort of game smarts his revered father Sir Kevin Sinfield had in his Leeds Rhinos days, son Jack added an extra point to keep the scoreboard ticking as the half closed to leave Warrington needing more than three converted tries.

In the Super League era, Warrington have been the eternal bridesmaids, watching on as traditional rivals Wigan and St Helens have swept up the silverware.

This was their fifth Grand Final, and felt like the chance to finally get their hands on the big prize and be champions for the first time since 1955.

Under head coach Sam Burgess, they had lost Challenge Cup finals at Wembley in the previous two years, but they had arrived at this game on the back of nine wins out of 10.

Crucially that sole defeat had been at Wakefield in round 26 of the regular season and in the opening 40 minutes, they had few answers.

But a high tackle by Trinity centre Corey Hall resulted in him being sin-binned early in the second period and, with a man extra, Lindop went over to offer a glimmer of a comeback.

However, Warrington could not score again with that momentum. Wakefield weathered the storm and, with numbers levelled up, they worked an opening for Johnstone's power and pace to deliver the decisive try.

Lindop went over again for his second as the Wolves desperately attacked, but with Ewan Irwin missing the conversion, Trinity players and staff were able to count down until the final whistle before celebrations could begin as Warrington's wait for another title now extends to a 72nd year.
