Widow's Bay is the most awarded television series at the 2026 Emmy Awards with 14 awards won (THE WINNERS), an announced result, widely anticipated by the award nominations last July, where the Apple TV show had received 19 nominations, and by the Creative Emmy Awards of 5 and 6 September which had already awarded 8 statuettes to the title.
The series won key awards, including Best Director, Best Writing, and three cast member awards, from Matthew Rhys, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, to Stephen Root and Kate O'Flynn, Outstanding Actor and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, respectively.
In Italy it was distributed between April and June, as in the rest of the countries where the Apple TV streaming service is available, the ten episodes of the first season (the development of the second was announced three months ago) are also visible on Sky and Now via the Smart Stick app.
The plot is simple: the mayor of Widow's Bay, a remote island in New England, has decided to transform the place into an attractive destination for mass tourism. It's a shame that strange and sinister things happen on the island that some inhabitants attribute to old beliefs that have their roots in the times of its foundation.
Here are some of the main reasons why the series deserves a rewatch by those who have already seen it and a first viewing by those who want to discover it.
The creator of Widow's Bay, Katie Dippold, has the NBC series Parks and Recreation and the writing of many episodes of Mad TV on her CV but just look at her social media to understand how passionate she is about horror. The Haunted Mansion, the 2023 film for which she wrote the screenplay, can be considered a step towards Widow's Bay, an episodic story in which she developed the fantasies she had as a child when she told stories about empty houses in New Jersey, where she went on holiday, and about the need to laugh when the stories get too scary.
In every episode of Widow's Bay we get scared (a lot) and laugh (a lot) and neither of the two directors tries to overlap the other, they exist in a perfect balance.
Along with the horror, the appearances of otherworldly creatures and the occurrence of inexplicable phenomena there is also the certainty that if something can go wrong it will, to quote Murphy's Law. And almost always every event is to the detriment of the protagonists. In a crescendo of absurd events: from the "simple" haunted room, to the collective nightmare (which takes on many variations in the show).
The cast of Widow's Bay brings together common faces, men, many women, many elderly people. There is no effort to make the inhabitants of the cursed island appear glossy, on the contrary, the community of the island's inhabitants reflects the ordinariness of an abandoned place, the loneliness and marginalization of individuals.
Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), is among the youngest at City Hall where Ruth (K Callan), Rosemary (Dale Dickey) work, who perhaps have more wrinkles than years (the first is well past retirement age).
Even Wyck, (Stephen Root), the fisherman at the mayor's side in his macabre discoveries, is getting on in years. Patricia (Kate O' Flynn) is an eccentric single woman approaching middle age, considered an outsider among her peers. Everyone is very real and this accentuates the contrast with the fantasy that surrounds the island. The four actors mentioned plus Betty Gilpin (guest star of a special episode) were nominated for an Emmy for their performances. There were four overall awards for the cast.
All of Widow's Bay can be read as a love letter to horror in ten episodes. Although it is an original story, each episode is born from a fantasy about something already seen on the screen or is a reworking of cult tropes of the genre, from Hitchcock to very famous B-movies.
For this reason, each viewing adds levels of interpretation and new details that were not immediately grasped. Between Jaws and Twin Peaks. Between John Carpenter's The Fog and Jack Arnold's Creature from the Black Lagoon. From Halloween (1978) to The House (1981). From Carrie to It.
Too many to list and many to pleasantly discover if you are a fan of horror on the screen and on the page and were a child in the Eighties (like the creator of the series). Widow's Bay will be the next place you want to vacation, if only it existed.
The community of Widow's Bay is trapped on the island and the island lives far from modernity, a fascinating element for those in front of the screen, less so for the characters in the story.
The past is the key to understanding the mysteries of the cursed island, a story linked to the sins of the original community whose consequences stain the lives of the show's protagonists. Each episode refers to a piece of a puzzle to be found between the fog and the waters of the bay.
In the escalation of events triggered by a new wave of terror, there is time to explore the bonds between the main characters, between Mayor Tom Loftis and his teenage son, for example.
No one is without fault and everyone sooner or later finds themselves faced with the dilemma of faith. To what extent are they willing to let their lives be influenced by the ancient beliefs of the island?
Widow's Bay became a phenomenon while the first season was still running and audiences in the United States voted it series of the year well before the official awards from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
As always, the aesthetics of the show, spontaneous and apparently not at all sophisticated, contributed to making it an object of attention from the creators who popularized the idea of "Widow's Bay style summer", relaunching the coastal and holiday imagery, cloaked in Summerween atmospheres, the anticipation of Halloween in the hot season.
The idea of summer in New England, already very popular thanks to various TV series, was reinvigorated by the show which made holidays in rustic, magical, eccentric, timeless places even more desirable.
Then there is the universe of memes, in which many hilarious scenes starring Matthew Rhys as Mayor Loftis have gone viral, increasingly at the center of crazy episodes.
Episode 4, Beach Reads, which features Patricia (Kate O' Flynn) and her cocktail party to the tune of The Rhythm of the Night, was born to be a cult and raised the ratings of the dance hit of the nineties.
Same goes for many quotes from the show. Among the most hilarious, the description of the sea witch that appears in the first episodes: "Old woman. Possibly damp. Faster than an old woman should be!" (literally "Old woman. Probably damp. Faster than an old woman should be!") or the slogan chosen by Mayor Loftis to push tourism on the island: "Widow's Bay: The next Martha's Vineyard!".
