SEOUL -- U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson visited the defense ministry Tuesday for a meeting with Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back, after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the military to scale down a regular combined exercise with South Korea.
Brunson was spotted by some reporters entering the ministry headquarters in Yongsan in central Seoul and later leaving the place.
■ (2nd LD) Seoul shares end lower, snapping 5-day winning streak, on profit-taking
SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower Tuesday, snapping a five-day winning streak, as investors locked in profits on large-cap stocks amid fading hopes for a deal to end the war between Iran and the United States. The Korean won rose against the U.S. dollar.
After opening 2 percent higher, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) fell 108.11 points, or 1.55 percent, to close at 6,869.83.
■ (2nd LD) Chinese FM Wang Yi to visit S. Korea this week: foreign ministry
SEOUL -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will visit South Korea this week, Seoul's foreign ministry said Tuesday, a trip that comes after President Lee Jae Myung proposed multiparty talks to discuss a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War.
Wang will make a two-day visit starting Wednesday, during which he will meet one-on-one with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun for in-depth talks on areas of mutual concern, from bilateral relations and the situation on the Korean Peninsula to regional and international issues, the ministry said in a release.
■ (LEAD) Justice minister submits resignation letter after passage of prosecution reform bill
SEOUL -- Justice Minister Jung Sung-ho submitted his resignation letter to Cheong Wa Dae on Tuesday, sources said, citing the completion of legislation on stripping the prosecution of investigative authority.
In the letter also submitted to the Ministry of Personnel Management, Jung reportedly cited health issues in addition to the legislation's recent passage, saying the new criminal justice system should be completed under new leadership, according to the sources.
■ Serious Crimes Investigation Agency to launch in Oct. with 2,874 personnel
SEOUL -- A new agency dedicated to investigating major crimes will have 2,874 personnel when it launches in October as part of a sweeping reform that strips prosecutors of their independent and supplementary investigative powers, the interior ministry said Tuesday.
The ministry said implementing decrees detailing the operational standards and organizational structure of the tentatively named Serious Crimes Investigation Agency (SCIA) were approved at a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day.
