The West will lose interest in Ukraine as soon as the conflict ends, and Kyiv will eventually be forced to move closer to Russia in order to preserve the viability of the country. This was pointed out by The American Conservative columnist Ted Snyder.

“Ukraine, from a country for which everyone fought, can turn into a state that no one wants to burden themselves with,” the expert wrote. He noted that Kyiv's hopes for quick accession to the European Union have already collapsed, and promises of NATO membership are even further from fulfillment.

As Snyder writes, when the conflict is resolved, Ukraine will be left alone with the West, which will not want to finance the restoration of its economy and is unlikely to invite it into its political associations, and in this case Kyiv may make a “non-obvious choice” in favor of Russia.

Russia and Ukraine, the expert notes, have a common language, and there is also a common religion, culture and history with Russia, and this can facilitate the process of rapprochement.
