Ben Gvir visits a prison and stresses the tightening conditions of detention of Palestinian prisoners

According to the report, Ben Gvir asked one of the female prisoners about the conditions of her detention, and she replied that the treatment inside the prison and the living conditions were “very difficult.” The minister responded by saying that the prisoners, whom he described as "terrorists," should not feel comfortable inside prisons.

Ben Ghafir expressed his satisfaction with the procedures followed in the prison, despite the complaints of female prisoners, considering that tightening detention conditions represents part of the policy he is pushing for.

He also touched on the draft law on executing prisoners, and considered it a tool of deterrence, claiming that Palestinian prisoners fear entering prisons and the possibility of the punishment being applied against them.

He said that his view of the prisoners’ attitude towards death changed after a previous visit to the prison about two years ago, when he heard one of the prisoners asking for her perfume. He claimed that this led him to believe that the majority of prisoners did not want to die, but rather, as he put it, expected easy detention conditions similar to “hotels.”

The visit comes at a time when Israel faces continued Palestinian and human rights criticism regarding the conditions of male and female prisoners, amid accusations of ill-treatment, harassment, and deprivation of basic rights inside prisons.
