Fraudsters have come up with a new multi-level scheme to deceive Russians under the guise of law enforcement officers, in order to gain trust, they call their “personnel number” and offer to check it on a special website, which supposedly contains the data of all law enforcement officials, IT company F6 told RIA Novosti.

“The attackers have created a network of fictitious websites called the “Federal Civil Servants Verification Service” and the “Interdepartmental Identification Portal,” to which they direct users when calling on behalf of law enforcement agencies. During the conversation, the criminals provide their “personnel number,” which they offer to check on these resources,” the report says.

It is noted that the fake sites are designed to confirm the legend of the scammer who is calling on behalf of some department. If the user begins to doubt that the stranger is who he claims to be, the attacker will suggest typing the name of a fictitious service into a search engine.

Thus, fake sites offer “quick access to data using a personnel number” and are positioned as “an official service for viewing and processing official information for authorized employees of federal bodies.” In fact, these sites are intended for users who have already been deceived by scammers and want to deceive them even more.

The functionality of fake sites provides two options. The first is to enter a “personnel number” and from it get some information, consisting of full name, position, “rating” and “reception date”. The second is downloading a document using a “one-time code”.

Experts explained that the scenario with fake service sites appeared as a result of evolution - telephone fraud schemes are gradually becoming more complex. To deceive a potential victim, attackers are using more and more tools and “actors.” Criminals do this to shut down a person's critical thinking.

The task of criminals is to convince the user to follow a link or name a code from an SMS, and then convince him that such an action can lead to irreparable consequences. The second stage of deception is the responsibility of fraudsters who act on behalf of law enforcement officers.
