An exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the surgeon Burdenko will open at the Victory Museum

MOSCOW, May 25 - RIA Novosti. The exhibition "Chief Surgeon", dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the outstanding physician, Colonel General of the Medical Service Nikolai Burdenko, will open at the Victory Museum in Moscow on June 3, the press service of the museum told RIA Novosti.

“On June 3, the Victory Museum will present the exhibition “Chief Surgeon,” which is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Nikolai Nilovich Burdenko. RIA Novosti, as well as eight museums from various regions of Russia, took part in the creation of the new exhibition project,” the statement says.

The exhibition will tell about the main stages of Nikolai Burdenko’s life and professional development. Thus, the exhibition will include about 100 original items from the collections of the Victory Museum, the Penza Museum of Local Lore, the Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia, the Military Medical Museum of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Museum-Reserve of the Heroic Defense and Liberation of Sevastopol, the State Historical Museum, the Museum of the Defense of Moscow, and the “Museums of Moscow” association.

Among the exhibits are photographs, documents, personal belongings, medical instruments, printed publications, awards, and paintings. The exhibition also included rare items - the overcoat, cap and dress uniform of Colonel General of the Medical Service Burdenko, the robe of a member of the Royal Society of Medicine of England.

In addition, visitors to the exhibition will be able to see Burdenko’s awards: three Orders of Lenin, a Stalin Prize Laureate Diploma of the 1st degree, a Certificate of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR awarding Burdenko the title of Hero of Socialist Labor for exceptional services to the state in the field of Soviet medicine and selfless, fruitful work in organizing surgical care for soldiers and commanders of the Red Army wounded in battles with the German invaders.

The exhibition will be complemented by dozens of photographs that will tell the story of Burdenko - from 1900 until the death of the outstanding physician in 1946. The photographs depict his relatives: father, grandparents - as well as Nikolai Burdenko himself during his student days and during the First World War. A number of frames are dedicated to his professional activities in the 1930-1940s and participation in the social and scientific life of Russia.

Nikolai Burdenko was born on June 3, 1876 in the village of Kamenka, Penza province. He went through five wars: the Russian-Japanese, the First World War, the Civil War, the Soviet-Finnish War and the Great Patriotic War. In 1937, Burdenko was appointed chief surgeon of the Red Army. During the Great Patriotic War, he personally performed thousands of complex operations, organized work to promptly collect materials on injuries and introduce the latest treatment methods into practice. He also tested new drugs in front-line hospitals, which, at his insistence, began to be used in military hospitals.

The "Surgeon General" exhibition will be on view until August 10th.
