Iran: Canceling a meeting with Gulf states in Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz at the request of Saudi Arabia

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said that the meeting, which was scheduled to be held on Monday, between Tehran and Gulf states in the Sultanate of Oman to discuss the status of the Strait of Hormuz, was not held at the request of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The official Iranian news agency (IRNA) quoted Baghaei as saying: “Iran and Oman have completed their understandings regarding the shipping lanes, and we will make a decision with the Omani side on how to announce this.”

An Iranian official had said that the postponement of the meeting came “at the request of some countries in the region.”

The semi-official Iranian Tasnim news agency quoted the Iranian Foreign Ministry official, Muhammad Ali Bey, as saying that the postponement came “based on the request of some countries in the region and the joint decision between Oman and Iran.”

He added, "The Islamic Republic of Iran, through close consultations with Oman, will make the necessary coordination to determine the appropriate date for holding this meeting."

The Sultanate of Oman announced the postponement of the meeting “in order to create the appropriate conditions for a constructive dialogue that contributes to achieving sustainable understandings that support the security and stability of the region, and meet the aspirations of its peoples for cooperation and peace.”
