Russians who are forced by attackers to commit treason or a terrorist attack under threats and blackmail can avoid punishment by reporting the incident to law enforcement agencies in a timely manner, Viktor Vaipan, chairman of the Moscow branch of the Russian Lawyers Association, told RIA Novosti.

Recently, foreign intelligence services and individuals acting in their interests have noticeably stepped up their influence on Russian citizens, who are forced to commit high treason under threats and blackmail, Vaypan said.

According to him, as a rule, attackers reach the victim through instant messengers and social networks. Criminals offer quick money for completing tasks - collecting and transmitting information about military and infrastructure facilities or committing other actions to the detriment of the country's security.

The lawyer recalled that treason is a serious crime, the maximum penalty for which is life imprisonment.

“The only correct action for a citizen who has received such an offer would be to stop any communication with the recruiter and immediately report the incident to the federal security service. It is important that the law provides for the possibility of exemption from criminal liability for someone who has already committed such a crime,” Vaypan said.
