During an emergency meeting held in New York, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Khaled Khayari, reported that the situation in the Bab al-Mandab Strait and its environs has become more volatile in recent days. He explained that the fighting intensified along the western coast of Yemen, coinciding with the Houthis' advance towards the strait and their announcement of control over a number of islands in the southern Red Sea.

He pointed out that the fighting forced civilians to flee their homes, which increased pressure on humanitarian operations that were already under pressure. He stated that at least 125,000 people have been displaced across Yemen since the beginning of the month, while the United Nations Human Rights Office reported that eight people were killed and 32 others were injured during the same period.

He also pointed out that the fighting has spread outside Yemen, with reports of attacks launched by the Houthis in Saudi Arabia.

In this context, Khiari said: “We call on all parties to protect civilians, respect international humanitarian law, and facilitate safe and unimpeded humanitarian access, so that much-needed aid can reach communities in need.”

He added: "What is required now is continued engagement that contributes to reducing tensions, preventing further escalation, and protecting freedom of navigation. The parties in Yemen should give priority to dialogue and engage constructively in UN-led efforts to reach a political solution through negotiation."
