Iraq: 20 million dollars and 60 kilograms of gold were seized in the case of the arrested Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil

(CNN) - The Iraqi judiciary revealed in a statement, on Sunday, the amount of money and gold that was seized in the case of the arrested Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Liquidation Affairs, Adnan Al-Jumaili, and the parties involved with him, as part of the campaign launched by the government against corruption.

The Supreme Judicial Council in Iraq announced that $20 million had been seized and 60 kilograms of gold recovered in the case of the arrested Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Liquidation Affairs, Adnan Al-Jumaili, and the parties involved with him.

The investigating judge of the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court said in a statement, “In coordination with the Kurdistan region, an amount of $20 million, $340,000 US dollars, and 200 million Iraqi dinars were seized, in addition to the recovery of 60 kilograms of gold, and the seizure of 7 cars, in the case of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil for Liquidation Affairs, the arrested accused Adnan Al-Jumaili, and the parties involved with him,” according to the official Iraqi news agency, “INA.”

The competent judge added, "The follow-up and investigation procedures to control the financial proceeds resulting from the waste occurring in the projects implemented by the accused and the parties involved in the case resulted in the seizure of the aforementioned amounts of money, gold jewelry, and cars."

The judge confirmed "the continuation of investigations and the prosecution of the other involved persons, leading to the completion of legal procedures against them," according to "Waa", which published pictures of the money and the amount of gold that was seized in the case.

The official Iraqi news agency, IA, quoted Iraqi officials as saying that a number of Iraqi political officials were arrested on charges related to corruption on June 29.

The agency stated that "the arrests were based on a statement given by the former Deputy Oil Minister, Adnan Al-Jumaili - who was arrested last month - and included members of Parliament whose immunity was lifted, and officials whose names were mentioned in those confessions."
