Specialists from the Tomsk Scientific Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences are planning to test an mRNA vaccine against lung cancer in 2027-2028.

Specialists from the Oncology Research Institute of the Tomsk National Medical Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences plan to conduct preclinical trials in 2027 and begin clinical trials of a personalized mRNA vaccine against lung cancer in 2028, Evgeniy Denisov, deputy director for scientific work at the research institute, told RIA Novosti.

“Together with Vector and the Institute of Biomedical Medicine SB RAS, we are developing a personalized mRNA vaccine against non-small cell lung cancer. We have already approached preclinical trials, we plan to conduct them in 2027 and obtain permission for clinical trials,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

He noted that clinical trials are planned to begin in 2028.

“We already have several vaccine prototypes, specific tumor antigens. We will test these prototypes on our own. I hope that this year we will understand that only certain prototypes work and we will officially transfer them to the preclinic,” Denisov said. Preclinical trials will be conducted on small animals.

According to him, the vaccine on human cells shows its effectiveness and now it is necessary to understand the therapeutic effect - to show that the immune system learns and destroys the tumor. According to Denisov, this is the first vaccine in the Russian Federation against the most common non-small cell cancer.
