Awarded a certificate of appreciation to the captain who rescued the crew from a fishing boat capsize off the coast of Tongyeong.

The captain who rescued the crew of an abalone fishing boat while fishing off the coast of Tongyeong, Gyeongnam, where a recent fishing boat capsize accident occurred, received a certificate of appreciation.

The Tongyeong Marine Police Station announced on the 22nd that it had awarded a certificate of appreciation to Kwak Dong-min (55), captain of the 301 Yeongdeok.

According to the Tongyeong Coast Guard, Captain Kwak was fishing in the waters off Tongyeong City on the morning of the 15th when he heard a request from the Coast Guard for cooperation in rescuing an abalone fishing boat. He moved to the accident site and carried out rescue activities, including transferring four sailors and two drifters on the hull of the stricken fishing boat to the 301st Yeongdeok.

Captain Kwak said, “I just did what I had to do in a situation where I received a rescue request,” and added, “I will continue to actively participate in rescue efforts whenever a situation requiring help occurs at sea.”

Ok Hyun-jin, head of the Tongyeong Coast Guard, emphasized, "I am deeply grateful to the captain who carried out rescue operations without hesitation in an urgent situation and saved precious lives," and added, "We will do our best to protect the lives and safety of the people by strengthening our cooperation system with civilian vessels."

Previously, at 4:10 a.m. on the 15th, a 9.77-ton coastal complex fishing boat A with seven people on board capsized in the sea 5.4 km southeast of Galdo, Tongyeong-si.

As a result of this accident, the owner of Ship A, Mr. B, in his 70s, was taken to the hospital, but eventually died.

Six other sailors on board A were rescued safely with the help of Captain Kwak.
