UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the loss of control over artificial intelligence could become an existential threat.

Guterres stressed the need for international cooperation to address existential threats including runaway AI, the climate crisis and deepening inequality.

UN, September 16 – RIA Novosti. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said there are concerns about the development of artificial intelligence that cannot be ignored; loss of control over AI could become an existential threat.

Guterres recalled that many of the AI ​​developers are “sounding the alarm” and calling for a pause and protective mechanisms.

“We cannot afford to ignore the concerns that have been raised, especially from those at the forefront of AI development,” he said during a press conference at the United Nations.

In addition, Guterres called the possibility of AI going out of control as an existential threat.

"At a time when the world faces three existential threats - runaway artificial intelligence, the climate crisis and unacceptably widening inequality - international cooperation is needed more than ever," he said.

Earlier, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slowing down the development of more powerful artificial intelligence models for security reasons. American billionaire Elon Musk, who owns xAI, as well as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have already expressed agreement with this idea.
