VTsIOM assessed the share of Russians receiving “gray” salaries

Almost a tenth of Russians receive so-called “gray” salaries, that is, payments in an envelope. This is evidenced by the results of a survey conducted by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM).

We are talking about citizens who receive all or part of their salary in an envelope, the organization clarified. According to the results of the study, these numbered 9 percent. For comparison, in 2006 the share of those receiving a “gray” salary was 19 percent. Thus, over the past 20 years, the indicator has decreased by 10 percentage points (pp).

At the same time, almost half of those surveyed (46 percent) admitted that they are sympathetic to this form of payment. Over the past three years, the share of citizens who are tolerant of envelope salaries has increased by 4 percentage points. Loyalty to “gray” salaries is generally higher among digital generations (alpha/partially millennials, 60 percent), as well as among men (52 percent) and residents of the largest Russian cities (58 percent), the study authors stated.
