The sister of the Gran Canarian student murdered in Mexico denounces that the family was not notified of other crimes at the university

Lara Tacoronte, the sister of Claudia, the Gran Canarian exchange student who was stabbed to death in Mexico this weekend, has denounced that no one notified her family that three other women had been murdered in the last year at the same university, the Autonomous University of Morelos.

"Do we really have to normalize that in less than a month (sic, in the last year) three women are murdered in the same university and that no one does anything. The people who are living there, who study in that place: why does no one do anything?" Lara Tacoronte laments, in a video that she herself has published on her social networks.

"I have no words, I don't know what to say, other than that we live in a sick society, full of... inhumane people," he says.

In Morelos, 69 women were murdered between January and July 2026 (21 femicides and 48 intentional homicides), out of a total of 1,250 violent deaths of women in Mexico (380 femicides and 870 intentional homicides), according to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).

Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera is the fourth student at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM) murdered in just seven months, after Kimberly Ramos, Karol Toledo and Michelle Itzayana Fuentes, cases that had already caused protests and student strikes to demand greater security.

Her sister Lara confirms that she had been in the city of Cautla for just "less than a month, three weeks", where she had gone with an exchange program from the University of Granada, where she was studying a degree in Early Childhood Education.

"She went to Mexico on an exchange and last night (Sunday) someone tried to steal her cell phone, a man. She ran away, he went after her and stabbed her in the stomach with a knife. Not once, but several times, without any type of justification," she says.

Lara Tacoronte emphasizes that no one had warned Claudia that she was going to a university where in the last year two other women had been killed, the last one in June, a circumstance that she already found out about there and that had her parents scared.

"My parents were obviously worried about her, that something bad could happen to her. They didn't like her being there, but she still wanted to live life, she wanted to see new places," says the student's sister.

The young woman wonders why nothing was done before and whether or not those responsible for organizing this university exchange knew the risks that this area of ​​Mexico offers.

The young woman explains that the family later learned, through published information, details such as that Claudia had been stabbed several times and that she had asked for help after the attack. "I stop to think about it, what the last moments must have been like. Alone," says Lara, who remembers that her sister was far from her family when she was murdered.

Regarding the statements of institutions that have publicly indicated that they are in contact with Claudia's family, her sister assures that they are not true. "He hasn't called my parents at all, and he hasn't called me at all," he says. Only calls related to "legal matters."

Claudia Tacoronte was 21 years old, came from the municipality of Santa Brígida (Gran Canaria) and was studying Early Childhood Education at the University of Granada.

In Mexico, she had just begun an academic mobility stay at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM), where she was murdered in a crime that the Prosecutor's Office is investigating as femicide.
