Spanish student murdered in Morelos during academic exchange

A 21-year-old Spanish student who was on an academic exchange in Mexico was murdered in the state of Morelos (center) in a crime that the Prosecutor's Office is investigating as femicide, according to local authorities reported this Sunday.

The governor of Morelos, Margarita González Saravia, confirmed the crime and assured that the state authorities established contact with the Spanish Consulate in Mexico to provide support and accompaniment to the family of the young woman, who was in the country as part of an academic exchange at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM).

For his part, the Morelos prosecutor, Fernando Blumenkron, reported that the events occurred on Saturday in the municipality of Cuautla, located about 100 kilometers south of Mexico City. In addition, he told several journalists that the identity of the attacker has not yet been determined.

Mexico is a country with high rates of sexist violence and in several states all violent deaths of women are initially investigated as feminicide. Subsequently, the authorities confirm or rule out whether the gender had any relationship with the motive.

According to Afp, the deceased student is Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera and she was attacked with a knife. Tacoronte came from the University of Granada and on Saturday he was at the National Medicinal Plant Festival when he was the victim of "an alleged robbery with a knife," reported the local House of Culture, the site where the event was taking place.
