The icon “Holy Trinity” by Andrei Rublev is being checked in the workshops of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra

The Icon of the Holy Trinity by Andrei Rublev is in the restoration workshops of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, employees of the State Tretyakov Gallery are checking its condition, the gallery’s press service told RIA Novosti.

Earlier, information appeared in a number of media outlets about the removal of the icon of the Holy Trinity from the iconostasis due to a breakdown of the climate chamber in which it was located.

“Trinity” is in the restoration workshops of the Lavra, employees of the Tretyakov Gallery are checking its condition,” the message says.

Andrei Rublev, canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church, painted The Holy Trinity in the 15th century for the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. The authorities seized it from the Church in 1929 and transferred it to the State Tretyakov Gallery. In 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the return to the Church of a masterpiece of ancient Russian icon painting.

The Rublevskaya Trinity was delivered from the Cathedral of Christ the Savior to the Trinity Cathedral of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra in Sergiev Posad on June 22, 2024. That same year, the Russian Orthodox Church established an annual celebration in honor of the bringing of the “Trinity” to the Lavra on June 22.
