MEXICO CITY, September 22 - RIA Novosti. Restrictions on the use of mobile phones and tablets in primary and secondary schools in Mexico will come into force on November 3, the country's President Claudia Sheinbaum said.

“They can be stored in a backpack, but mobile phones will not be used during class or during recess,” Sheinbaum said at a morning press conference.

According to her, the corresponding decision of the National Council of Educational Authorities (Conaedu) will be published on September 22 in the official gazette of the government.

The decision was made unanimously at a Conaedu meeting on September 18, with the participation of federal and regional education authorities from all 32 states of Mexico.

After the publication of the document, the country's Ministry of Public Education will be given 30 days to hold information meetings in schools, where the new rules will be explained to teachers and parents.

The use of mobile devices and screens will be allowed in cases of emergency or when necessary related to the specific needs of children, Sheinbaum said.

The restriction will apply to students in primary and secondary schools. In institutions of secondary specialized education, each educational institution will independently establish rules for the use of devices, taking into account safety requirements and the possibility of their use for educational purposes.

There are no plans to introduce a ban in higher education institutions. The Ministry of Education intends to promote responsible and safe use of devices there, including the development of a digital culture based on ethics and critical thinking.

"The goal is to bring back creativity and avoid uncontrolled screen use, which, especially in connection with social media, can have very negative consequences," the president said.
