It rains for 34 days in a row in Tokyo, breaking 140-year record

The Kanto region of Japan has been rainy recently. Rainfall was observed again in central Tokyo today (29th). It has been raining for 34 consecutive days since August 27th. It not only surpassed the record of 33 consecutive days in 2019, but also set a new record for the longest continuous rainfall in 140 years since statistics were collected in 1886. As Typhoon Shuliki approaches, the number of consecutive rainy days in Tokyo may continue to extend.

According to Japanese media reports, precipitation has been observed in central Tokyo for 34 consecutive days from August 27 to September 29, breaking the old record of 33 consecutive days from June 27 to July 29, 2019, which is equivalent to rain every day for more than a month. In the 30 days from August 30 to September 28, the cumulative rainfall in central Tokyo reached 629.5 mm, equivalent to 275% of the average for the same period in previous years.

The main reason for this long period of rain in Tokyo is that the autumn rain front has been stagnant near Honshu, Japan for a long time. Coupled with the successive impacts of typhoons such as Korowang, Dujuan, and Shuliki, the Kanto region has experienced record-breaking prolonged rain. Affected by the autumn rain front today, it will still rain intermittently in the center of Tokyo until tonight.

It is estimated that there may be short-term rains around October 1 due to the influence of the autumn rain front and the path of Typhoon Shuliki. Therefore, there is still a chance that Tokyo's continuous rainfall record will continue to increase. Continuous rains have also reduced Tokyo’s September sunshine duration to only 45.8 hours, making it the second-lowest September sunshine duration on record, second only to 39.2 hours in 1988.

People in Tokyo have a chance to see sunshine after October 1. The rainy weather that has lasted for more than a month is expected to end this week, but the actual weather conditions still depend on the path of Typhoon Shuliki.
