The Chinese delegation attended the 37th session of the FAO Fisheries Committee of the United Nations and hosted a side event

China News Service, Rome, September 11th The 37th Session of the Fisheries Committee of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was held in Rome, the capital of Italy, from September 7th to 11th. The Chinese delegation participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, China and FAO co-sponsored the side event "Promoting Aquaculture Innovation and Jointly Promoting Green and Sustainable Development" to conduct discussions around technological innovation, regional cooperation and development, investment empowerment and multi-party participation. Representatives from New Zealand, India, South Africa, the Network of Asia-Pacific Aquaculture Centers (NACA) and other countries and international organizations spoke. China pointed out in the keynote report that China's aquaculture production will be 63.26 million tons in 2025, accounting for 83% of the total aquatic product production. China adheres to the concept of high-quality aquaculture, implements the revitalization of the aquatic seed industry and research on breeding science and technology, develops new models such as integrated rice and fishery farming, and writes new sustainable requirements into the newly revised "Fisheries Law of the People's Republic of China". At the same time, China is deeply involved in South-South cooperation in aquaculture to help relevant countries innovate and develop.

At the same time, China was invited to participate in a high-level event hosted by FAO to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the Agreement on Port State Measures. The event invited 7 key fishing countries around the world to speak, with China being the only representative from Asia. At the event, China introduced various progress measures since it officially joined the Agreement in April 2025, including stricter port access, announcing the first batch of 23 designated ports, standardizing ship inspections, establishing a compliance information platform, strengthening compliance training and improving capabilities, etc.

In addition, China has set up a theme exhibition corner on the ten-year ban on fishing in the Yangtze River to focus on the practice and results of the ten-year ban on fishing in the Yangtze River and the protection of aquatic life. From 2021 to 2025, a total of 351 species of indigenous fish have been monitored in the Yangtze River Basin, 43 more species than before the fishing ban; the wild population of Yangtze finless porpoises has recovered from a low of 1,012 to 1,426, and the aquatic life integrity index continues to increase.

The FAO Committee on Fisheries is an important intergovernmental platform in the field of global fisheries and aquaculture. This participation is an important practice for China to actively participate in global fisheries governance and deepen international fisheries cooperation. (over)
