Nowon-gu, Seoul, newly constructed public building 'Nowon-gu Upcycling Center' obtained 4th grade zero energy building certification

Nowon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Seo Jun-oh) announced on the 23rd that the newly built public building 'Nowon-gu Upcycling Center' received the Zero Energy Building (ZEB) Grade 4 certification from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

This is the first outcome of Nowon-gu's policy of mandating ZEB grade 4 for public buildings promoted in accordance with the 'Carbon Neutrality Promotion Plan in the Construction Sector (Zero Energy Building Guidelines)' established in August 2024.

The center is equipped with a highly insulated and airtight shell and new and renewable energy facilities.

In particular, building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and photovoltaic power generation (PV) allow the building envelope to be used as a power generation element while also producing power in idle spaces such as the roof. Through this, the energy independence rate of over 40% was met.

The Upcycling Center, which was completed with the goal of opening in November, is a resource circulation base for the spread of upcycling (upcycling) culture. It has 1 floor underground and 5 floors above ground, with a total floor area of ​​1,300.02㎡, and will include a repair and repair space, exhibition and sales space, a cafe, a children's experience space, a classroom, an upcycling laboratory, and a recycling center.

The district predicted that ZEB certification for other public buildings would also follow.

Taereung Eoullim Library, Youth Entrepreneurship Center, and Yeongchuk Mountain Forest Complex Experience Center have completed preliminary certification for ZEB level 4, and the community center to be built within Hwarangdae Railroad Park is also undergoing the preliminary certification process.

So far, the district has established and operated zero energy building guidelines one to two years ahead of the central government's roadmap.

A district official said, "The upcycling center's ZEB level 4 self-certification is an example that shows that Nowon-gu is leading the way in practicing carbon neutrality in the construction field," and added, "We will continue to show continuous results starting with public buildings so that solutions and leading models for carbon neutral architecture can be spread to the private sector."
