You Xikun recalls the 40 years since the founding of the Democratic Progressive Party: consolidating democracy and defending sovereignty is a common mission

Today (28th) is the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic Progressive Party. You Xikun, the former legislative director of Yilan County, was the mastermind behind the formation of the party. He published an article with the title "Consolidating democracy and defending sovereignty" as the common mission of our generation, calling on everyone to cherish the hard-won democratic freedoms.

You Xikun pointed out in the article that recalling this day 40 years ago, a group of "non-party" politicians announced the formation of a party at the Grand Hotel on September 28, forcing Chiang Ching-kuo to announce 10 days later that he would "move towards lifting the martial law." "Strict" and "liberal party ban" are moving forward", followed by a series of democratic reforms such as the "lifting of martial law" in 1987, "comprehensive congressional re-election" in 1992, direct presidential election in 1996, and political party rotation in 2000.
