Mexican people march to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the disappearance of 43 students in Ayotzinapa

In Mexico City, people held banners, chanted slogans, and held a march to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students. Parents of the missing students led a procession from the Angel of Independence monument; the case remains unsolved.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Mexico City today, wearing red clothes and marching with symbolic coffins, demanding that the government clarify the truth about the disappearance of 43 normal students 12 years ago.

Agence France-Presse and other media reported that students from the Teachers College of Ayotzinapa, Mexico, went from Guerrero state to Mexico City to participate in a protest on September 26, 2014, but were stopped by local police in the town of Iguala. After that, street conflicts broke out for several hours, leaving six people dead and 43 people missing.

Prosecutors initially said the police handed over the 43 normal students to hit men from a drug cartel, who killed them, burned their bodies and dumped their remains in the river.

However, independent human rights experts have dismissed the government's findings, and the cold case remains a stain on Mexico's international reputation.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum often meets with the families of the missing. After the Attorney General's Office conducts a detailed review of relevant evidence, Sheinbaum is expected to submit a report on the latest developments in the case on the 28th.

More than 134,000 people are currently listed as missing in Mexico.
