Donald Trump spoke in favor of the reunification of Ireland and Northern Ireland

US President Donald Trump wanted the unification of Ireland and Northern Ireland to take place, calling it a fantastic prospect. This was reported by Reuters with reference to the statement of the American leader at a meeting with Prime Minister of Ireland Michaul Martin in Dublin.

“I don't want to cause problems, but I tell you, I would really like to see it united. It will happen eventually... I think it would be fantastic,” Trump told reporters. He also added that the UK would have "something to say about it" but reiterated: "I think it would be great." These comments come amid the recent statement by new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham that a referendum on Northern Ireland's secession from the United Kingdom is "not on the agenda."

Under the terms of the 1998 Belfast Agreement, which ended three decades of bitter conflict between Irish nationalists and unionists, a referendum on the secession of Northern Ireland can only be held if the British government decides. Polls show a majority of people in the region favor remaining part of the UK. However, the gap narrowed after the country left the European Union, which brought the topic of unification to the top of the political agenda.

Trump's visit comes amid planned anti-war and anti-Trump protests in Dublin. Ireland, one of the most pro-Palestinian countries in the European Union, passed legislation in July restricting trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank, drawing criticism from US lawmakers and the US ambassador to Ireland.
