Keelung City's public works scandal expands, two officials detained

The Keelung District Prosecutor's Office expanded its investigation into the Keelung City Government's bid-rigging case for public projects. Yesterday, two more officials were detained and barred from seeing them, and two more officials were released on bail pending questioning. Keelung City Council Speaker Tong Ziwei said yesterday that citizens had lost confidence in the city government's integrity due to the case of the Civil Affairs Department's misuse of citizens' personal information during Mayor Xie Guoliang's term, and now another case of rigging project bids. Faced with the continuous investigation of fraud cases and the continued expansion of the situation, the City Government only stated that everything was handled in accordance with the law.

Tong Ziwei said that this is not the first time that the business units of the city government have been involved in cases. From the civil affairs department's abuse of the household registration system to investigate citizens' personal subsidies and their dismissal, to this year's project bid-rigging and bribery cases, even Kuomintang members who have a close personal relationship with the mayor were involved. This shows that there are problems with the city's public works-related mechanisms, the municipal government is no longer honest, and citizens have lost confidence. I hope Mayor Xie Guoliang will come forward to explain the complete situation to the citizens and not take it lightly.

It is understood that so far, four civil servants from the Keelung City Government (including a contractor who was fired after the incident), a city councilor, an industry owner and his company personnel have been detained in the entire case. A total of seven people have been detained.
