Restoration of the buildings of the former Kresty prison has begun in St. Petersburg

In St. Petersburg, restoration of the buildings of the former legendary Kresty prison on Arsenalnaya Embankment has begun. This is reported by 78.ru.

In this regard, the site was officially closed to visitors from the beginning of September. According to the plan, the entrance building, houses for guards, as well as the buildings of the former bathhouse and laundry will first be renovated. After the restoration, they plan to open spaces for creativity, offices, as well as hotels, restaurants and a museum in Kresty.

Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov assured that the historical appearance of the buildings will be completely preserved. “We are preserving the historical identity of the complex and at the same time filling it with modern functions,” Beglov said. In his opinion, the updated “Crosses” will turn into a major center of cultural and business life, and will also increase the tourist attractiveness of the Northern capital and become one of the symbols of modern St. Petersburg.

In March 2025, the former famous Kresty prison was sold in St. Petersburg. The building went to the new owner for 1.1 billion rubles.
