Daejeon City prepares a plan to allow 50 km/h nighttime speed in children's protection zones

Daejeon City announced on the 17th that in relation to speed limits in children's protection zones, it has prepared a 'part-time speed operation' plan that allows up to 50 km per hour during night time, focusing on roads with at least six round-trip lanes.

The city plans to maintain the current speed limit of 30 km/h during the day, but flexibly adjust the speed limit to 50 km/h at night, taking into account road and traffic conditions.

This project, which will invest 6.928 billion won, will be implemented in stages for a total of 46 sections until 2028. Starting with 4 sections this year, 15 sections will be added in 2027 and 27 sections in 2028.

First of all, this year, fixed signs will be installed on roads with four lanes or less. Starting in 2027, we plan to install variable signs on major roads with six or more lanes to inform drivers of speed limits by time zone.

The city conducted a joint inspection with the Daejeon Police Agency by conducting a thorough survey of road conditions and traffic characteristics in sections where the 30 km/h speed limit was applied within the children's protection zone. In the future, the plan is to listen to the opinions of residents, including parents, and finalize the target section and detailed operation plan through traffic safety review by the Daejeon Police Agency.

Park Seung-won, the city's transportation director, said, "Rather than applying a uniform speed limit even at night, we need to operate at a reasonable speed that takes into account the conditions of each region," and added, "We will pursue this as an effective project to increase transportation convenience for citizens while protecting the safety of children."

Currently, Daejeon City is implementing part-time speed operation in the Daedeok Elementary School area of ​​Yuseong-gu starting July 2023.
