[Reporter Huang Mingtang/Taitung Report] Taitung County Government Social Affairs Department Coastline District Social Welfare Service Center received a request for help from a young mother who said she had just given birth alone at home and hoped to provide assistance. After receiving the report, the social workers immediately went to visit and found that the newborn boy was in abnormal physical condition and was suspected of having major health risks. They immediately launched a cross-network cooperation mechanism and successfully assisted the baby boy in timely medical treatment. The doctor diagnosed the baby boy with congenital anus, which could have been life-threatening if not discovered and treated in time. Fortunately, with the immediate cooperation of all units, the surgery and medical care were successfully completed and a precious life was successfully saved.
The Social Affairs Department stated that the mother did not receive prenatal check-ups during her pregnancy due to lack of knowledge about maternal and childbirth health education, and took the initiative to seek assistance from the Social Affairs Department after giving birth. After arriving at the scene, social workers not only cared about the condition of the mother and child, but also simultaneously assessed the family's care needs. They immediately contacted the fire rescue system to assist in sending the child to the hospital. They also coordinated with the Home Defense Center and the Taitung City Social Welfare Service Center to provide emergency supplies such as milk powder, diapers, etc. They also took inventory of the support system of relatives and friends to help arrange care for another young child in the family. The hospital's medical team quickly conducted examination and treatment, and the hospital's social workers assisted in arranging transfer to a hospital for specialist treatment and surgery, demonstrating the immediate collaborative power of social welfare, firefighting, medical, home defense and community support networks.
Director of Social Affairs Chen Shulan said that the social welfare service center is the first line of social safety net in the community and shoulders the important tasks of family care, resource connection and network coordination. This case was able to detect and successfully rescue the newborn in time, which shows the importance of proactive help and timely reporting. Currently, Taitung County has four social welfare service centers in Taitung City, Coastline District, Longitudinal Valley Line District, and Southern Circuit District, providing localized and accessible welfare services and consultation channels.
