Xi Jinping met with Modi for the first time in seven years during his visit to India, saying that China and India are partners, not rivals

Chinese President Xi Jinping visited India for the first time in seven years on the 12th and held bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. China and India had a deadly border conflict in 2020. Now the two sides have returned to talking about border peace during talks. Xi Jinping even stated that China and India are "partners, not opponents."

"Reuters" reported that in June 2020, a fatal conflict broke out between Chinese and Indian soldiers in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh, resulting in the death of at least 20 Indian soldiers and 4 Chinese soldiers; the two countries subsequently continued to face a heavy military confrontation on the disputed border. It was not until the two sides reached a disengagement agreement in 2024 that the tension gradually cooled down.

India's "The Indian Express" reported that Xi Jinping said during the meeting that China and India should handle bilateral relations from a long-term and strategic perspective, and called the two countries "partners, not competitors." Modi responded that lasting peace in the border areas is the basis for the further development of bilateral relations, and both sides should handle long-standing border issues through mutual respect.

In response to the rising interaction between China and India, the Wall Street Journal analyzed that the recent frictions between US President Trump’s administration and India on trade and foreign policy have become the external background for India to rethink its relations with China. The report pointed out that China also intends to reduce its confrontation with India, thus creating more space for contact between the two sides; however, India still maintains strategic cooperation with the United States.

"Reuters" pointed out that the two sides also talked about resuming more transportation and personnel exchanges and continuing to maintain border peace. Xi Jinping’s visit to India this time is his first since 2019.
