Last year, a 29-year-old man surnamed Chen in Taichung City lost control after using a large amount of poisonous coffee pods. He broke into a swimming school in Xitun District with a gun and pulled the trigger twice on the coach and two children. Fortunately, the gun did not fire and he narrowly escaped death. The first instance was sentenced to 6 years in April for attempted murder and other crimes. Chen appealed, and the Taichung High Court today (23rd) rejected the appeal and upheld the original sentence.

Chen Nan broke into a swimming school on Guangming Road in Xitun District on the evening of October 10, 2025. At that time, the coach surnamed Ye was taking a 6-year-old and 7-year-old brother and sister to practice in the swimming pool. Chen Nan not only approached the coach and the children with a gun, but also aimed the gun and pulled the trigger. Fortunately, the gun Zhi failed to fire for unknown reasons. Seeing that something was wrong, the coach immediately protected the children and took advantage of the short gap to evacuate with the two young children. Unexpectedly, Chen Nan picked up the pistol and pulled the slide again, aimed at the three people and pulled the trigger. The gun still did not fire, and the three people narrowly escaped death.

After Mr. Chen left the swimming pool, he still waved his gun in a nearby parking lot and even banged the windshield of the car with the gun. The police arrived and arrested him. They seized guns, bullets and a large amount of drugs. After arriving at the case, Mr. Chen admitted that he had drunk 20 poisonous coffee bags before the crime. He argued that he was confused and could not control himself before committing the crime.

However, the court believed that he held a gun and pulled the trigger on a child under the age of 7 and a coach. The crime was serious. In the first instance, he was sentenced to 6 years and 4 months in prison. After the sentence was completed or pardoned, he was ordered to be detained in a corresponding place for 2 years. During the appeal, Chen Nan claimed that he had no accomplices, no collusion, and no risk of escape. He performed well in the detention center and received a certificate. He also had a 2-year-old child to take care of, and asked for bail.

However, the court believed that he was involved in a felony of more than 5 years, and there were still reasons and necessity for his detention, and ruled to postpone the detention. The second-instance collegial panel also believed that the original judgment was not inappropriate, rejected the appeal, and maintained the 6-year and 4-month sentence. He can still appeal.
