Red caviar production in Russia has decreased almost threefold in a year

From May 20 to September 7, 2026, 2.6 thousand tons of red caviar were introduced into trade in Russia. The newspaper Izvestia reports a sharp drop in the production of the popular delicacy, citing data from the Center for the Development of Advanced Technologies (CRPT).

For comparison, a year earlier the figure was at 7.66 thousand tons. Thus, over 12 months, the production of red caviar on the domestic market decreased almost threefold, or by 5.06 thousand tons, analysts said.

The achieved result was 66 percent below the level of 2025 and 49 percent below the level of 2024. The year before last, during the specified period, a total of 5.15 thousand tons of red caviar entered trade.

Experts said the main reason for this trend was the unsuccessful salmon fishing season. In 2026, the rate of catch of this family of fish (salmon, pink salmon, chum salmon, sockeye salmon, lake and brook trout, coho salmon and chinook salmon) is 2.5 times lower than last year, lamented the head of Rosrybolovstvo Ilya Shestakov.
