Poland demands decisive clarifications from Israel regarding the killing of its volunteer in Gaza

Among these volunteers was a Polish citizen, announcing at the same time the opening of a parallel judicial investigation to uncover the circumstances of the incident.

The Israeli decision, which was communicated to Warsaw on August 19, 2026, sparked widespread official dissatisfaction, as the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in a statement that it had presented “a critical assessment of the measures taken so far to clarify the causes and course of this tragedy,” demanding that Israel hand over to Polish investigators all necessary materials and explanations.

For his part, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister, Ignacy Niemczytsky, described the Israeli decision as “surprising,” stressing in statements to PR1 radio the principle of proportionality in the use of force, saying: “We believe that the use of force must be proportionate, and the disproportionate use of it must have consequences, and therefore we expect decisive clarifications on this issue.”

The details of the incident date back to April 2024, when an Israeli air strike in the central Gaza Strip resulted in the killing of 7 workers at the “Global Central Kitchen” charitable foundation, which was founded by the famous chef José Andrés.

Among the victims was Polish volunteer Damian Sobol, from the city of Shemišl in southeastern Poland, an incident that sparked a wave of widespread international condemnation at the time.

Warsaw was not satisfied with the diplomatic protest, but the Polish Foreign Ministry revealed that the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the city of Shimiśl had begun conducting a parallel and independent investigation into the incident, but the Polish move was not alone, as Australia also summoned the Israeli ambassador in Canberra last Thursday, in protest against the same decision, since one of the 7 victims of the raid had Australian citizenship.
