8 countries support Trump’s Gaza peace roadmap and condemn Israel’s rejection of Palestinian statehood

Agence France-Presse reported that the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Turkey, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates said in a joint statement that they "condemn Israel's blatant rejection of this road map" and Palestinian statehood, and accused Israel of undermining the advancement of the plan and "efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace."

The Associated Press reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly rejected the 15-point plan supported by the United States last week, showing a rare tough stance towards the Trump administration, its closest ally.

Under the road map, the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas must hand over weapons to a committee of Palestinian technical officials responsible for daily operations and management of Gaza. Hamas links the handover of heavy weapons with the establishment of a Palestinian state, but the current Israeli government opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state.

The road map includes Hamas gradually disarming, Israel halting attacks and beginning to withdraw from Gaza. But Netanyahu stressed that Israel would never withdraw from any of its positions in Gaza unless Hamas was completely disarmed.

The stance stalled other parts of the ceasefire plan, including reconstruction efforts and the deployment of international troops to buffer areas between Israeli forces and areas controlled by the technical committee.

In a joint statement, the eight foreign ministers also called on Trump's Board of Peace and the United States to "take immediate and concrete actions" to prevent any party from obstructing the implementation of the plan.

Netanyahu faces a difficult election on October 27 and is trying to retain power through a coalition government that includes many cabinet ministers who have taken a hard line on Gaza. Until then, it remains unclear whether he will take decisive measures on the ceasefire plan.
