Today, Sunday 6 September 2026, the fifth day of the 83rd edition of the Venice Biennale International Film Festival opened. Amanda Seyfried, Louis Garrel and Valeria Golino were spotted at the Lido in the morning and, while awaiting the awards ceremony of the eighth edition of the Filming Italy Venice Award hosted by Tiziana Rocca, also Irina Shayk, Lino Banfi, Pilar Fogliati, Monica Guerritore, Matilde Gioli, Herbert Ballerina and Massimiliano Gallo, Eduardo Scarpetta, Leo Gassmann, Clara McGregor, Malcom McRae, Alessandro Preziosi, Ilenia Pastorelli, Irene Maiorino, Alanah Bloor, Sveva Alviti, Beatrice Arnera, Aurora Quattrocchi and Alessio Vassallo.
Among the 21 films in competition is the Italian The Echo Chamber by Andrea Pallaoro, based on a screenplay by Bernardo Bertolucci and starring Luca Marinelli, Alicia Vikander and Susan Sarandon. A love story in which the boundaries between presence and absence, care and dependence, desire and control blur until they dissolve.
Also in competition is the film Possible Love by Chang-dong Lee. Two married couples, two worlds that meet through the camera: a fired worker and his wife, a documentary maker and her husband.
Finally, still in Competition, there is the film Woman Unknown by May el-Toukhy. Marie is about to marry Christian, the rich widower for whom she works as a maid and nanny. For her, marriage means becoming the lady of the house. But there's a secret that could shatter everything.
Out of Competition are the Non Fiction films From Inside Out – The Architecture of Peter Zumthor by Wim Wenders, Life of Jorge Luis Borges by Mariano Llinás and Holy Wood Dust by Victor Kossakovsky.
Also on the program is the Masterclass with Luc Besson.
In the Orizzonti section there are the films The Difficult Bride by Rubaiyat Hossain and Oasis by Jannis Lenz.
In the Biennale College Cinema section there is the film Moonfish by Daniel Zvereff.
In the Venice Spotlight section there is the film Hombre al Agua by Gael García Bernal and with Ricky Martin.
In the Venice Classics section there are the films The Long Night of '43 by Florestano Vancini and Cul-de-sac by Roman Polanski.
In the Giornate degli Autori section there are the films Carla Lonzi, inside and outside the world by Francesca Archibugi and Agata the Writer by Kuba Dorabialski and with Mia Wasikowska.
In the Critics' Week section there are the films Revolver by Paoli De Luca and London by Márcio Picoli and Victor Marco.
"It was a great responsibility to inherit Bernardo Bertolucci's latest screenplay, but I immediately understood that the best way to honor its essence was to let it filter through the sensitivity of the great artists who contributed to this film. Then there was the awareness that the screenplay addressed issues close to me such as the boundary of the identity of the individual and as a couple and the different nuances of relationships between people such as independence, physicality, the need for control and to take care of the other", said Andrea Pallaoro, director of the film The Echo Chamber, in competition at the 83rd edition of the Venice Film Festival. The protagonists are Luca Marinelli, Alicia Vikander and Susan Sarandon. "The memory I carry is personal", Marinelli then joked, "and it is that of having worked with an impressive group of artists and of feeling like the wrong one among them... when I acted with Susan or Alicia I thought of a text by De Filippo in which one of the characters says: "I missed the line to listen to it". Well, I often got lost in their processes. And this is beautiful".
The 22nd edition of Cortinametraggio, the international short film festival of Cortina d'Ampezzo scheduled from 15 to 21 March 2027, was presented at the Italian Pavilion of the Hotel Excelsior. Two new features: the return of the competitive section dedicated to music videos, and a new synergy with Nuovo IMAIE, which will lead to the winners of the Fabio Sartor Prize entering the Festival's Young Jury by right. The call for participation will open on 14 September 2026.
At the Berlin Film Festival "what I said is that we filmmakers are the opposite of politicians. We have empathy. Politics works without it. We have a very different mentality. We don't work with the mentality of politicians. We work with that of empathetic people. And our goal is to change things. Politics is based on confirming the status quo. This is what I said. Parade of stars today with the Filming Italy Award, the collateral award organized in conjunction with the 83rd edition of the Venice Film Festival. At the Lido they will receive recognition, among others, Pilar Fogliati, Alessandro Preziosi, Alba Rohrwacher, Francesca Archibugi, Gabriele Muccino, Francesca Comencini, Giorgio Pasotti, but also international artists such as Orlando Bloom, Irina Shayk, Malcom McRae, Clara McGregor, Alanah Bloor and Akinola Davies Jr..
