Pensioners can receive free travel, discounted medications and sanatorium-resort treatment, and after 80 years of age, the fixed payment to the old-age insurance pension can be doubled, Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Yana Lantratova told RIA Novosti.

The Federal Ombudsman recalled that today there is no single benefit for all public transport for all pensioners in the country, and the conditions are set by the regions independently.

“Therefore, in some places there is a free ride, in others there is a discount, and in others the benefit is provided only to certain categories,” Lantratova said.

At the same time, the commissioner emphasized, there are also federal measures. For example, non-working pensioners living in the Far North and equivalent areas and receiving an appropriate insurance pension can receive compensation for travel to and from their vacation spot once every two years. Recipients of a set of social services, if eligible, can travel to and from the place of treatment free of charge. There is also a program of subsidized air tickets on certain routes.

“Pensioners receive medical care under compulsory medical insurance on a general basis. At the same time, for certain benefit categories, free or discounted medicines and sanatorium-resort treatment are provided. The possibility of free dentures also depends on the category of citizen and regional rules,” the ombudsman added.

In addition, Lantratova noted, a person who needs help due to age, health, injury or disability can apply for social services at home. After assessing the situation, an individual program is drawn up for him. A social worker can help with everyday issues and other necessities.
