“It should be taken into account that the process of producing antibodies in the body takes a certain time and their maximum protective level is not formed immediately, usually only by the 45th day after the start of vaccination,” Lebedev told Gazeta.Ru.

Therefore, according to the doctor, a special vaccination regimen has been developed, which should not be interrupted or changed on one’s own initiative - it is important to complete the full course, even if it seems that there is no risk.

Lebedev noted that the vaccine is administered intramuscularly and the vaccination schedule looks like this: the first vaccination on the day of application, then on the 3rd, 7th, 14th, 30th and 90th day. Lebedev also emphasized that the peculiarity of the rabies vaccine is that it works even with emergency use after contact with the virus.

In turn, Vladimir Neronov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, infectious disease specialist at Meditsina JSC (academician Roitberg’s clinic), noted that the incubation period of rabies can be very different: from several weeks to a year or more.

“After entering the body, the virus spreads mainly along the nerve pathways, so the duration of the latent period is influenced by the location and severity of the bite, the amount of virus and the distance from the site of damage to the central nervous system. The source material notes a range from one to two weeks to a year,” Neronov told Gazeta.Ru.
