British Prime Minister Burnham: Brexit will do more harm than good and does not rule out returning to the EU in the future

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said today (30th) that the impact of Britain's 2016 Brexit "will do more harm than good" and that the UK should consider various options for its future relationship with the EU and does not rule out rejoining the EU in the future.

"Reuters" reported that Bonnam told the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in an interview that the UK should evaluate different approaches to its long-term relationship with the EU and decide which path is the best way forward. Before the interview, he bluntly stated at the Labor Party's annual conference that Brexit would "do more harm than good."

"We can maintain the status quo, that's definitely an option, if people are OK with that," Bonnam said. "We can also look at what George Osborne has said about a customs union, we can evaluate the single market proposal that the Liberal Democrats put forward at the conference, or we can go straight to the end." He added that the government should weigh the "feasibility" of these options as well as the pros and cons.

Osborne, a former chancellor of the exchequer, advocates that the UK should establish a customs union with the EU, while the Liberal Democrats call for the UK to rejoin the EU single market.

Bonnam has previously stated that he hopes to see the UK return to the EU in his lifetime, because the UK cannot afford another decade of uncertainty. "My position is very clear, and I also bluntly say that leaving the EU will do more harm than good. So the question is, what should we do?"

Bonnam said yesterday that he would use the UK-EU summit to be held in November this year to outline various possibilities for the long-term relationship between the UK and the EU.
